Home Church

   Posted by: Sandi   in Parenting

We are now a few weeks into Home Church for my little guy and myself.   Every week, I ask him what he wants to hear about (because I think that helps focus him as we start this new routine and it helps to give God’s Word greater relevance if he gets to choose) and then I find a coloring page or activity page and tell the story from one of the Bibles I used when I was still in Youth Ministry.  (Builder doesn’t like “kid Bibles” so this is a good compromise.)

Today, the story was David and Goliath.  Due to the necessity of keeping his attention, I do some acting out of the story, changing the language to more “contemporary” phrasing, while showing him what the Bible actually says.  This makes him listen and react, which is good.  Then he did the activity page. Today it was a word search.  With each word, I asked him who or what in the story related to that word.  “Armor. Who wore armor?  Afraid.  Who was afraid?”

I am thinking that when he runs out of stories he wants to hear, I will alternate stories of the Judges (Ehud really captures the imagination!) with Jesus’ teachings.  We’ll see how that works.:-)

After we have our lesson, we talk to God (after discussing what we wish to talk to God about) and then we have a snack and then our Sunday School time is over.  It isn’t perfect, but it is preferable to spending half of Sunday morning walking aimlessly about, or having melt-downs in class or in the Children’s Ministry.

It is a challenge, but I am trying to do what is best for my whole family, even if it isn’t always optimal.  Sometimes, in a house like ours, that IS the best that can be done.

Thanks be to God for his mercy, grace and sense of humor!

I think this is a good idea and a great way to make God’s word relevant to Builder. It’s a good thing you have so much experience teaching Sunday school. Don’t forget to supplement your lessons with videos if you think Builder would be interested in them.

Judges is one of my favorite books in the Bible, too. =)

Myclette, thank you. :) We’ve been using Veggie Tales videos so far, but not this week. I’ll need to keep an eye open for some different ones!

Judges has some great stuff!

You are such a great mom and I admire you. Builder is going to grow up to be a remarkable man and he’ll teach his own children all the wonderful things his mommy taught him.

Connie, that’s so kind of you. :) Dunno WHAT Builder will do with his life, but I do try to keep an array of options open. :)

You are doing great! From a pure “story” point of view, Chronicles and Kings have some great ones in it. Judges (as you said,) Exodus, Genesis, Jonah, (Which I think you said you’ve done.) Of course there is the Gospels and Acts… Growing up I loved Acts, it is still one of my favorite books of the Bible…Describing the birth pains of the new Church as they wrestled with themselves and did their best to keep doing God’s work..despite their own humanity.

This is kind ofa sad testament to our times: I have a friend that was watching the new drama “Kings” on NBC. He told me it was based on the story of David…because he hadn’t know that until he read about it. To one that has read the story of David, that fact is very obvious. There was a time when even the most unchurched person knew the stories of bible…

Perrye — *chuckle* Thank you. When I was in high school, an old classmate of mine and I had a running gag that it was “all my fault.” I guess that’s still true? I don’t know about “great,” but I do try. And in parenting, I think it counts. :)

Warren — I had considered Acts, of course. Not sure how much of it the little guy would internalize outside the sheer “story” of it, but then I guess it’s like that with most of the Bible. All I can do is share it with him.

I had heard of that Kings series. My mother was quite intrigued.
